And my coffee mug went tumbling after...

You could’ve picked anywhere to spend your reading time, but I’m honored you landed in my sweet and cozy world. No matter what genre I write, the only thing steamy you’ll find in here is the coffee. Thanks for being here!
Several months ago, my editor tumbled from a small stepladder and hurt her shoulder. My first thought was to stay off ladders. We’re not getting any younger. A few years ago, I joined AARP. You know, the club that is designed for people 50 and over.
I’m a relatively careful person. I avoid going outside in foul weather. I wear shoes that support my arches. I move dog toys from the path of foot traffic throughout the house to avoid tripping over them.
So you can imagine my shock that the thing that finally took me out was my own clumsiness. It happened last Friday. One minute, I was kicking off my bedroom slippers in preparation for going to lunch with my husband. Next, I was sprawled on the floor. My phone landed in one direction and my coffee mug in the other.
Thankfully, the mug was empty and survived the fall. My knee was another matter. I landed on it, followed by my hip, and then the rest of me followed. After I finished my pity party, I struggled to my feet. The hubby found crutches in the walk-in closet.
The next few days were an adventure. Two days after the fall, our family joined my mother in a gorgeous Airbnb overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Mom got to see her very first Falcon 9 rocket launch from the comfort of our balcony. We had our belated Christmas dinner and exchanged gifts.
I put aside my late-night ways for the duration of our stay and woke up to this view on two of the three mornings we were there. No sand in my toes, but the saltwater air still worked its usual magic.
And while everyone else walked on the beach, I stayed behind to write. I might have been able to finally walk without bursting into tears from the pain, but I wasn’t about to risk another fall trying to maneuver across sand on crutches.
I have promised to be more careful in the future, and from now on, I will only kick off my bedroom slippers after I sit on the edge of the bed.
