When our kids joke with their dad about getting older, he always reacts with hysterical pessimism. It’s as if the very act of being called “old” turns more of his hair silver on the spot. (Not that I’m complaining—I’ve always had a thing for a silver fox.)
When I joined the "half-century" club a few years ago, I embraced it like a battered paperback rescued from a Little Free Library on the way to the beach—well-worn, full of stories, and still worth the trip. Early bird dinners? Discounted meals at my favorite restaurants? AARP? Cheaper cell phone service? Bring. It. On.
Now here’s the kicker: for someone who claims to avoid social media, my husband sure spends a lot of time on TikTok. At least once a day, he’s showing me cute animals—don’t even get him started on the baby joey channel—or people doing hilarious things with no regard for their dignity or lower back pain. And whenever we chat about current events, he’ll start with, “Well, I saw a video on TikTok…”
And I’m thinking, “Oh, honey. Of course you did.”
Several weeks ago, I tried reviving my poor, neglected TikTok account. I made the cute videos. I added the trending music. I got… minimal views
Then I posted a random video of our son’s dog, Arthur, hopping out of my office chair when I asked if he’d like to write a book about cats. Boom. Internet gold. He’s now in my top five most popular videos. Go figure.
