The March book for my 2025 reading challenge was An Irish Bookshop Murder by Lucy Connelly. I loved being able to travel to an Irish village without leaving home.

The Pioneer Woman I’m Not
My husband has a little crush on the Pioneer Woman. She’s a redhead, she can cook, and she appears to clean up her own messes. When we were homeschooling our sons, we were watching an episode of the Pioneer Woman’s television show where she blissfully homeschooled, prepared dinner, and did some other amazing things without chaos or disaster. It was his perfect day.
Too bad it only happened on television. Our homeschooling process was more like an episode of I Love Lucy—the one where she babysits the twins who tie her to a stake and plan to set her on fire.
While my husband adores the Pioneer Woman, Lucille Ball is one of my favorite redheaded actresses. If my best friend (who also happens to be my editor) lived closer, I’m sure our daily adventures would be a lot like Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz’s in the I Love Lucy episodes I love so much.
So when my husband came home from the grocery store and complained about the price of bread, I took inspiration from the I Love Lucy episode titled “Pioneer Women” and bought a bread machine.
Was I meant to be a breadmaker?

Using the breakmaker was surprisingly easy. I found a recipe online from a website called , dumped the ingredients into the machine, and turned it on. Making sure to insert the ingredients in the correct order was the most challenging part of the process. Three hours later, we had the loaf of bread you see in the images above.
And it was so delicious! The flavor was fresh. We could slice it to whatever thickness (or thinness) we desired. Most importantly, we could control the ingredients. After setting pans of water on fire and blowing up the oven in an attempt to heat frozen lasagna, I had found my culinary calling.
Whether you make bread in the oven like my friend or in a bread machine, there is a lot of science behind it. After mastering basic bread on the first try, I went on to experiment with garlic bread, cinnamon bread, and savory herb breads with mixed results. Sometimes I used a recipe, and sometimes I’d try to wing it. I do not recommend winging it when making bread.

When witness protection moved my owner Gracie from Seattle, there went my supply of treats from Pike Place Market.
Why, you ask? Gracie’s ex, Ben, sold something called tech secrets so she turned him in. No great loss—he didn’t even like dogs.
Now I have a room at Gracie’s bakery in the California redwoods. Her assistant sneaks me treats! As long as I stay away from the murderers, I’ll be fine.
That's all for now. I hope your day is filled with books and coffee (or whatever you’ve got in your favorite mug). Happy reading!
Until next time,
Becky

Gurrrl! I'm so laughing! But yes, your bread turned out awesome.
Love this! Reminds me of the rustic Italian olive sourdough recipe I adapted from NYC restaurant Il Buco for easy home cooking!
