Proof Small Town Magic Is Real
And honestly, it's also a little weird, but that's what I love about it.
Thanks for being here. In a couple of weeks, I’m announcing something new. I hope you’re on board for it, because it’s super fun and exciting. Remember - the only thing steamy in here (or any of my books) is the coffee.
There’s something about small Southern towns people don’t always talk about. It’s not just the slower pace or the way everyone knows your business before you do. It’s the moments that we have trouble explaining.
You know, the kind where you pause mid-sentence and think, “Did that really just happen, or did I accidentally wander into one of my own books?”
Because here’s the thing. Small-town life has its own kind of magic. It’s not the flashy kind of magic that comes with magical spells and talking pets. It’s the peculiar kind that gets you front page in the local newspaper.
It’s the “you can’t make this stuff up” kind. You think I’m kidding? Check this out…
Last month, a kangaroo in my town was recently found not guilty in a man’s death.
A pair of feral emus (nicknamed Thelma & Louise) escaped a nearby farm.
Someone running for city council allegedly tried to win votes with free ice cream.
These are the tip of a very large and ever-growing iceberg of weirdness. That last one raises more questions than it answers. What flavor ice cream was it? Was it soft-serve in a cone or hand-dipped? Most importantly, lactose intolerance aside, why wasn’t I offered free ice cream? Not that it would have changed my vote.
You see what I mean, though. Everyday weirdness plus my overactive imagination has given me ideas for so many books and series. You can be sure that in my books, just like in my small town, beneath the charm and the front porches and the friendly waves… there’s always something just a little unexplained.
Like our county’s overabundance of UFO sightings, which is also going in a book. Because if a kangaroo can beat a murder charge, anything feels possible.
And I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Fans of Gilmore Girls and Murder She Wrote won’t want to miss this suspenseful cozy novel from USA TODAY Bestselling author Nancy Robards Thompson.
It’s one thing to write a mystery, but when your daughter is the suspect — you solve it.
Wedding planner Jenna Bell doesn’t panic when the groom is a no-show to the ceremony – even though he is her former high school sweetheart and this wedding is the small town’s event of the year. However, when he turns up dead and she is falsely accused… well, yeah, now it’s the time to panic.
Jenna’s mother, Maddie, puts her cozy mystery writing skills to use to try to clear her daughter’s name, stepping on by-the-book Chief of Police Jackson Bradley’s toes in the process. No matter how enticing he finds her, he doesn’t want this writer-turned-amateur-sleuth interfering with his murder investigation.
With nearly all of Hemlock, North Carolina, picking sides and the town’s own Gossip Brigade churning out the rumors, Maddie discovers the mystery isn’t very cozy when it hits this close to home.
That's all for now. I hope your day is filled with books and coffee (or whatever you’ve got in your favorite mug).
Happy reading,
Becky

A kangaroo beating a murder charge! Ha! I know what you mean about the weird things that happen - I live in Florida. IYKYK ;) I love how you frame this as magic. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.
