I’d Like to Introduce You to Basil
Basil isn’t your ordinary talking cat. He’s British. Most of his plans involve the following things, and not in this particular order, mind you:
ordering a human to make it so he can’t see the bottom of his food bowl
picking on his canine “brother,” Loki, who Zip (the main character) found in a dumpster, which Loki calls the big metal trash box
adding his unsolicited feline snarky commentary to other people’s conversations
And he does it all with a British accent. Did I know he was British when I began writing the Magickal Beans series? Heck, no.
Even if I plot my books down to the last clue and red herring, the characters continue to surprise me. Did I know that (redacted character name) and (other character name) would hook up at the end of book one? I did not, but they seem to have planned it the whole time. Little did I know that book three would include… well, no spoilers here.
The biggest challenge in the Haunted Housekeeping series was not to overuse the word “wicked,” as the books took place in New England. Reviews are mixed about whether I met my goal.
When writing Basil’s dialogue, the biggest challenge is to make him sound just British enough and not to accidentally use any British-isms that have hidden NSFW (not safe for work) meanings.
I’m eternally grateful to my long-time writing pal, Ross Tuohy, for being willing to answer questions about U.K. versus U.S. words and phrases, so much that I made him a character in book two, THE TAINTED TEA LEAVES, which I’m currently writing.
Speaking of the series, the first book, THE CURSED COFFEE BEANS, releases in less than two weeks. Be sure you’ve pre-ordered so you can get your copy on July 1st!

He’s a West End blueblood. She’s an East End cop. When they met, it was murder.
Lord Anthony Hetheridge, Chief Superintendent for Scotland Yard, has made a name for himself catching killers—a name all his own, apart from his hereditary title.
On the cusp of his sixtieth birthday, the wealthy lifelong bachelor has it all—until DS Kate Wakefield upends his elegantly ordered world. The divide should be insurmountable—age gap, wealth gap, and a class gap wider than the Thames.
But as Hetheridge, Kate, and his protege, DS Deepal “Paul” Bhar, investigate the brutal murder of a financier, he finds himself falling in love with Kate—even as the clues lead to a secret from his own past.
That's all for now. I hope your day is filled with books and coffee (or whatever you’ve got in your favorite mug). Happy reading!
Until next time,
Becky

I have enough trouble doing early 19th century vocabulary, let alone a British cat!
I love learning about Basil! Sounds like it’s going to be a fun series.
