Where there’s smoke, sometimes there’s phantosmia.
You don’t have to be part of a firefighter family to be hyperaware of the signs that something might be wrong.
Yesterday, I went to the pharmacy to pick up some prescriptions. I’d been out of one of them for a while, through no fault of my own. I took one as soon as I returned home.
But a couple of hours later, I started smelling smoke. I could taste it in the air. I nagged my husband, a retired firefighter, asking why he didn’t smell it?
Late last night, totally freaked out and ready to run my hands over all the walls in our home, I still smelled smoke. My eyes burned. Except there was no smoke. What the actual flamingos was happening?
It didn’t help that I’d been watching Grey’s Anatomy (I’ve made it to Season 7. Only 15 seasons to go until I’m caught up!) and letting Meredith Grey and her friends diagnose me through their TV patients. Was I having a stroke? Did I have a migraine? Did someone secretly stick a knife in my brain? No, no, and definitely not.
As it turns out, I seem to be suffering from phantosmia, a kind of scent hallucination. I have the list of symptoms that would require a call to the doctor, but for now, it’s fine. It’s really annoying, but it’s also a side effect of the medication I restarted yesterday after not having taken it for nearly two months.
Free Cozies Make Everything Better
This is the time of year when I’m weaning off the sugar rush of Valentine’s treats and trying to sleuth out what my family has planned for my birthday next month. Last year, my big gift was a big car repair bill. 10/10 do not recommend it.

Interesting. I didn't know that phantosmia could be a medication side effect. I just assumed it was yet another symptom of perimenopause. I used to go crazy trying to figure out what was burning. Now, I worry that I will be late in noticing a real fire because I'll assume it's just my phantosmia.
I've never heard of that before! You taught me something new :)
